Finding a Family Physician or Specialist
The Doctor Search tools provided by provincial Colleges of Physicians & Surgeons are perhaps the most
direct method for finding family physicians currently accepting new patients, but not all such Colleges offer this service. Other
very good options may be available. Some provinces (Manitoba, Québec, PEI, and Newfoundland - for the St. John's area), for example,
have programs to connect patients with family physicians accepting new patients.

Different strategies are being developed to address the need in each province. In Ontario, we see Family Health Teams
and Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics; Health Care Connect is a new service that helps people find physicians and nurse practitioners who
are accepting new patients in their community. Québec has Groupes de médecine de famille, Community Service Centres (CLSC),
and there is an increasing focus on the provision of nurse practitioners. Other provinces work through Regional Health
Authorities, delivering a complex array of services. In addition, for non-urgent medical problems, the majority of provinces
provide a bilingual tele-health service (24 x 7 x 365), staffed by Registered Nurses who provide answers, advice, and
recommendations.

Walk-in Clinics are found in many local communities and, as some physicians build their practices at these
acute-care facilities, they are accepting new patients for the longer term. Information pertaining to your
local area is readily found through online search, or through your regional health authority.
Finding a Naturopath
Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are most easily located by using the "Find A Naturopathic Doctor" search provided by the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND).
This enables you to search by First Name, Last Name, City, Province, and Postal Code.

If you're looking for a list of NDs in your area, it's often easiest to Search by Province.

If you don't know what a Naturopathic Doctor is, you can read about their training here.
Provincial CAND links, showing which provinces regulate NDs, are presented here.

For a list of NDs in Ottawa, see Ottawa Walk-in Clinics. | |

About Doctor Search
It can sometimes be difficult to find a new doctor, particularly if there is
a shortage of physicians in the area where you live. If you’re trying to find a
new doctor, you may wish to try the following strategies:

Health Care Connect
Health Care Connect is a Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC)
program which helps Ontarians without a family health care provider find one.

The program refers people without a regular family health care provider to
physicians and nurse practitioners who are accepting new patients in their
community. To register for the Health Care Connect program, call 1-800-445-1822,
or for more information, visit the MOHLTC website...

Local Hospital(s)
Hospitals often know which physicians with privileges or on staff are accepting new patients, and may be able to provide a few contacts.

Community Health Centre(s)
Community health centres are organizations that provide primary health care and prevention programs through physicians and a variety of other health
professionals. If you have a local community health centre, it may be taking new patients. Keep in mind that most community health centres only provide services
to people who live within their particular community (i.e., within their “catchment area”) and/or target populations...

Community Health Centres in Ontario

Local newspapers
Some physicians, including those who are new to an area or who are beginning to establish a practice, will advertise that they are accepting new patients.
