To locate a family doctor who is accepting new patients in the Ottawa area or elsewhere in Ontario:

  • Contact your local community health centre to see if new patients are being accepted.
  • Register with Health Care Connect, a program launched by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to help Ontarians find a family health care provider if they do not have one. This process may take some time.
    • Try the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Health Care Options Directory. Enter your postal code and select the service option(s) of interest to you (e.g., Family Health Team, Family Doctor, Walk-in/After Hours Clinic). Note that family doctors do not always post their availability or keep their listings up-to-date.
    • Another strategy, more tedious but likely to prove successful, involves searching for "family physicians" in the YellowPages™, or looking under "Physicians & Surgeons" in the YellowPages™ phonebook, then calling around until you find one who is accepting new patients.
  • See Doctor Search, a service provided by the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario.
  • Try calling the local hospitals — they may have a list of physicians new to the area.
  • Check the local newspapers — physicians new to the area will sometimes advertise that they are accepting new patients.

For Québec residents: 

  • Appletree Medical Group accepts Québec patients at all of their clinics in Ottawa.
    Sunrise Medical Center (opened in December 2010) also accepts Québec Health Cards.

Most walk-in clinics provide weekday and evening services; most are also open during the weekend. Many clinics suggest that you arrive at least one hour before closing time.

Be advised, however, that clinic names, locations, phone numbers, hours of operation, and walk-in and appointment policies are subject to change. Recently, for example, Rideau Charlotte Medical Centre moved to Montreal Road and became the Montreal Road Medical Centre. Care Medics (Hunt Club) and Medical Care Clinics (Kilbourne Medical Centre) became private clinics and stopped accepting walk-ins. Several clinics made minor adjustments to their hours of operation; Westboro Medical Centre made a major adjustment, and is now open from 9am-3pm, Monday through Sunday. During the months of June, July and August, several other clinics have variable hours.

We strongly recommend that you first telephone the clinic that interests you.

City of Ottawa Walk-In Clinics
Active Care Medical Group provides walk-in services in the Ottawa area at three locations, listed by region in the table below.

AIM Health Group has four walk-in clinics in the Ottawa area.

Operating across Ontario, AIM Health Group runs several Health & Wellness Centres, Medical Clinics, and Rehabilitation Clinics; for a full list of these services, see Clinic Locations.

Four AIM Health Group locations in the Ottawa area are listed in the table below. Note that the Merivale and Hillside locations have closed, merged with the Train Yards location.

Appletree Medical Group provides an online Health Directory of services and health practitioners in the Ottawa and Gatineau. Appletree Medical Group accepts Quebec patients at all of their Ottawa facilities.

The Appletree website also provides a live update of Locations and Wait Times, so you can anticipate approximately how long it may take to see a doctor at any given Appletree clinic.

Healthy Smiles Ontario is a new program for children and youth, 17 and under. Your kids can receive free regular dental services (check-ups, cleanings, fillings, x-rays, and scaling) if you meet the eligibility criteria, which include Ottawa residency, household in-
come of $20,000 or less per year, and no access to any form of dental coverage.

Print and complete the Healthy Smiles Ontario Program application form; then, take the form and the required documentation to any Client Service Centre in Ottawa.
